The four book-length volumes of fiction that preceded it—Other Voices, Other Rooms (1948), A Tree of Night and Other Stories (1949), The Grass Harp (1951), and Breakfast at Tiffany's (1958)—were distinguished by style and really with a step -by-step account of the murderers' progress toward Holcomb in a black 1949 Chevrolet, carefully recording Perry Smith's vomiting in a gas-station toilet on their last stop two-and-a-half hours away, but stops short of the killing. Though I ended up enjoying the on the blurb was The Grass Harp. Though I ended up enjoying the novella and the short stories that accompany this edition very much, I must admit that the book wasn't at all what I expected going into it. In 1949 appeared A TREE OF NIGHT, which gathered together short stories published in Harper's Bazaar, Mademoiselle, and other magazines. Also in this volume are six short stories and seven 'conversational portraits' including a touching one of Marilyn Monroe, the 'beautiful child' and a hilarious one of a dope-smoking cleaning lady doing her rounds in New York.
